Why do artists need to learn about business?

July 24, 2015

Works In Progress Louisiana knows that, when creative people have the business tools they need, they are more likely to enjoy sustainable careers and contribute to our region's overall economic health.

Unfortunately, most college-level arts education curricula do not include classes in grant writing, business plans, goal-setting, contract negotiation or intellectual property.

Furthermore, the only "entrepreneurship training" available to artists in North Louisiana comes with a hefty $500.00 price tag, and focuses primarily on marketing and branding.

The Board at Works In Progress Louisiana offers no-cost professional business training to creative workers across North Louisiana, via workshops hosted by qualified experts.

Artists, musicians, authors, craftspeople and teachers from six parishes in North Louisiana have attended a series of free grant writing workshops hosted by Works In Progress Louisiana.

Our workshop attendees' comments included:

"My favorite parts of the seminar were (learning about) appropriate grammar, wording (terminology), and the budget chart."

"I was recently hired by a local arts council to write grants.  I learned so much from the Q&A portion of your workshop!"

"This workshop was excellent in its relevance, usefulness of information, and quality of presentation (audio & visual)."

"The grant resource handouts we received at the WIPLa workshop were excellent and a great resource!"

"I am completing my MBA at Louisiana Tech....and I loved every bit of your workshop.  I would like to further extend any help I can offer to your organization on a volunteer basis."

We are always seeking professionally-trained volunteers to teach workshops through Works In Progress Louisiana!
